Responsibilities

Requirements: - Demonstrates an ability to effectively utilize the prescribed nursing process when providing direct patient care; implements nursing process in order to provide quality care based on assessed patient needs. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. - Demonstrates an ability to effectively utilize the prescribed nursing process when providing direct patient care; implements nursing process in order to provide quality care based on assessed patient needs. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. - Performs a physical-psycho-social assessment on assigned patients utilizing all available sources of information (i.e., patient, family, medical record, etc.); accurately perceives patient problems and/or complications while incorporating patients perception of illness. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients. - Documents in a complete, clear and concise manner, the initial assessment on the Nurse Admission Assessment form and subsequent assessments in the nurses notes. Communicates data with other members of the health care team. - Formulates an accurate individualized patient care plan, on assigned patients, patients admission, based on nursing assessment and standards of care; care plan to include patient problem/need, expected outcome and nursing actions/measures. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. - Modifies nursing care plan as required by changing patient needs as determined by evaluation of care administered by self and others; evaluates effectiveness of nursing intervention in achieving patient out-comes; continues patient assessment and documents evaluation in nurses notes. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. - Performs technical aspects of patient care according to established policies and procedures; utilizes proper techniques; adapts techniques to unique needs of individual patient; plans and coordinates patient treatment and activities on unit and with other departments to allow for optimal patient rest. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. - Administers medications with knowledge of action, mode of administration, side effects and contradictions; carefully orders, prepares, administers, and evaluates medication and intravenous therapy. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served - Implements physicians orders after consulting appropriate sources regarding unfamiliar or questionable orders. - Documents patients response to and effectiveness to treatments, medications and nursing interventions on the patients medical record according to established procedures as outlined in the unit policy and procedure manual. - Communicates as needed with physicians regarding patients responses and problems. - Demonstrates an ability to completely provide individualized, goal directed nursing care to Post Anesthesia Recovery patients through use of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation from admission to discharge. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. - Interprets arrhythmias and provides intervention according to the physician orders; anticipates arrhythmias and complications based on knowledge of pathophysiology and takes appropriate action. - Demonstrates an ability to competently administer medications, monitor life support and automated equipment and give emergency resuscitation on both adult and pediatric patients, as required. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. - Demonstrates an ability to perform all duties required of both a circulating and scrub nurse in the Operating Room, in accordance with established procedures, as required. - Demonstrates an ability to assess and interpret reports (ex. EKG, Urinalysis, radiology Studies, Hematology Studies, Chemistry Profiles, Coagulation Studies, Serial Cardiac Enzymes, Arterial Blood Gases). - Maintains accurate and complete records and ensures appropriate reports and records are on a patients chart prior to transfer out of the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit. - Ensures complete recovery of patient from anesthesia according to Post Anesthesia recovery policies and procedures, before transferring out of the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit. - Participates in pre-operative patient education and explains post-operative care routines, extraneous equipment, diet, activities and self-care techniques. Regularly updates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the ages of patients served. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients. - Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center. - Makes appropriate in-house referrals, utilizing appropriate resources: peers, administrative director, physicians, and others for consultation on patient care problems. - Maintains the dignity and confidentiality of the patient: serves as a patient advocate at all times. - Develops a teaching/discharge plan for individual patients; identifies home health care needs or options for alternative placement and support resources; initiates procedures for referral to home health agencies in accordance with established hospital policies. - Assumes the responsibility of the Charge Nurse position in the absence of the Director as assigned. - Demonstrates the ability to effectively serve as District Leader on the unit as assigned. - Demonstrates an ability to plan, supervise an instruct LPNs, Nurses Aides/Technicians, Unit Secretaries; make appropriate staff assignments in accordance with the patients needs and the personnel capabilities and qualifications; consistently supervises and evaluates their patient care rendered; assists staff as needed inpatient care. - Participates in the evaluation of newly-employed personnel and of unit personnel performing their assigned duties - Demonstrates knowledge of and rationale for safe use of equipment; reports any equipment malfunctions and orders service as necessary. - Assists with orientation of staff members and serves preceptor as requested by Director. - Attends staff nurse and unit meetings and continuing education programs; attends all JCAHO required inservices annually. - Maintains Quality Assurance standards for patient care. - Demonstrates a complete knowledge of the location, care and operation of all Post Anesthesia Recovery equipment; troubleshoots equipment as necessary. - Participates in the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit Quality Assurance program, as required. - Assists in developing, reviewing and revising all policies and procedures for the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit, as required. - Demonstrates initiative and contributes to the growth and development of the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit by providing information and suggestions that would improve the departments operations. - Demonstrates the ability to provide accurate information to the family and/or significant others, who are in the Post Anesthesia Recovery waiting room; makes regular rounds to the waiting room and willingly offers information to allay fears and decrease anxiety. Communicates clearly and tactfully with patients. - Performs other duties as assigned. - Constant standing, walking, stooping, bending, stretching, lifting, pulling, pushing, turning, and occasional sitting. - Frequently lifts objects from 10-150 lbs., frequently carries objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently lifts with assistance, objects greater than 150 lbs., and pushes objects up to 200 lbs. - Manage time appropriately to meet patient and department needs. - Knowledge of care and handling of instrumentation realizing that proper care and use are extremely costly. - Works indoors in a well lighted and ventilated area. - Possibility of cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment. - Some direct exposure to contagion, but risk is minimal when proper safety precautions are observed. - Possibility of strains due to moving patients (or objects). - Requires substantial standing, walking, stooping, and lifting. - Willingness to work with the realization that errors and incompetency may have serious consequences to patients.

Qualifications

Qualifications: - Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; current NJ licensure, BLS, ACLS, PALS and IV Certification required. - 3 years RN PACU and/or Critical Care experience required.
